Itinerary

Day 1.Bishkek – Burana Tower – Kok Moinok Canyon – Bokonbaevo

Distance: 302 km | 4–5 hours driving
Roads: Asphalt with some dirt sections

  • Morning pick-up in Bishkek by your guide and driver.
  • Drive east toward the Chui Valley and stop at Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret built by the Karakhanid dynasty. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the valley. Explore the open-air museum with ancient balbals (stone warrior statues) and learn about Silk Road history.
  • Continue toward Issyk-Kul Lake with a stop at Kok Moinok Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of Kyrgyzstan” for its dramatic rock formations and red cliffs.
  • By evening, arrive in Bokonbaevo, a picturesque village on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. Here, you will stay in a traditional Kyrgyz yurt camp, where nomadic culture is still alive.

Meals: Lunch at café, dinner at yurt camp
Overnight: Yurt camp (shared outdoor WC, no internet)
Notes: Nights can be chilly — bring layers, a flashlight, and warm socks.
Good to know: Staying in a yurt offers an authentic but simple experience — perfect to “disconnect and recharge.”

Day 2.Bokonbaevo – Eagle Hunting Show – Skazka Canyon – Jeti-Oguz – Karakol

Distance: 230 km | 4–5 hours driving
Roads: Asphalt with short dirt sections

  • After breakfast in the yurt, attend a traditional eagle hunting show. Local falconers (berkutchi) demonstrate how golden eagles are trained to hunt foxes and hares — a practice passed down through generations. You’ll also try your hand at archery, another nomadic skill.
  • Continue along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and stop at Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon, where sandstone cliffs form incredible shapes resembling dragons, castles, and animals. A short hike will reveal the most colorful viewpoints.
  • Next, head to Jeti-Oguz Gorge, famous for its towering red cliffs known as the “Seven Bulls” and the “Broken Heart Rock.” Learn the legends behind these natural formations.
  • In the evening, arrive in Karakol, the cultural hub of eastern Kyrgyzstan, known for its mix of Russian, Dungan, and Kyrgyz influences.

Day 3.Karakol – Altyn Arashan Valley (4x4 Adventure)

Distance: 30 km off-road | 3–4 hrs including hike
Roads: Off-road by 4×4 jeep

  • Morning departure from Karakol with 4×4 jeeps into the remote Altyn Arashan Valley. The name means “Golden Spa” in Kyrgyz, famous for its natural hot springs, alpine meadows, and snow-capped peaks.
  • Light hiking through spruce forests and along the river with views of Palatka Peak (5,260 m). Optional dip in the natural hot springs.
  • Return to Karakol and enjoy a city tour:
    • Visit the Russian Orthodox Church, a beautiful wooden structure built without nails.
    • See the Dungan Mosque, built in the shape of a Chinese pagoda without a single metal nail.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant with authentic Karakol dishes (e.g., ashlyanfu, laghman).

Overnight: Hotel in Karakol (private bathroom, Wi-Fi)

Day 4.Karakol – Cholpon-Ata – Bishkek

Distance: 420 km | 6–7 hrs driving

  • Drive along the northern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, the second-largest alpine lake in the world.
  • Stop at Kyrchyn Valley, once the site of the World Nomad Games — a vast alpine meadow surrounded by mountains.
  • Lunch in Cholpon-Ata, a lakeside town known for its open-air petroglyph museum and sandy beaches.
  • Continue to Bishkek in the afternoon.
  • Evening farewell dinner in Bishkek at a traditional Kyrgyz restaurant.
